Attorney General Jim Hood works hard for Mississippi consumers by prosecuting crimes of home repair fraud and identity theft, as well as protecting Mississippians from unfair and deceptive trade practices. The Consumer Protection Division strives to ensure that Mississippi victims do not fall prey to unscrupulous business practices and scams. Each year, our office takes thousands of calls and mediates hundreds of cases of consumer fraud and unfair tactics. Finally, General Hood’s office works to educate Mississippians to prevent them from becoming victims of these crimes. This division serves the public in the following three distinct areas:


Consumer Education seeks to create an informed public, able to avoid problems before they occur. Consumer Education actively teaches by presenting programs to consumers across the state and through distributing educational literature on consumer rights and concerns.


Consumer Advocacy investigates and mediates consumer complaints and seeks to remedy disputes in the consumer’s favor (when possible).


Consumer Fraud actively pursues violators of the Mississippi consumer laws. Investigation here is often long-term, and legal action is taken against businesses with systematically deceptive practices.
